Retreat

Retreat - Krysten Ritter
my review : ✮✮✮✮
I had the best time reading this book. It is exactly what I am looking for in a thriller: fast-paced, twisty, not too disturbing, and totally unputdownable. I love a book about women behaving badly, and reading this story from our con woman’s POV was totally intoxicating. This whole book is about slipping into someone else’s skin, and it was a wild ride as a reader getting to slip into Liz’s.
Liz is a con woman. We meet her in Chicago, working her charms, but she’s over the brutal Chicago winter, and she’s feeling some heat from her past cons, so it’s time to move to her next destination. When she hears from Isabel, a wealthy woman who’s seeking help with her art curation at a house in Mexico, Liz is interested. When she learns she’ll have the house to herself for a week, she is thrilled. It’s time for Liz to take a break from the exhausting life of a con woman. Well, she can’t totally shake the con woman life. Her boss’s Net-A-Porter orders aren’t going to wear themselves!
I realize I really didn’t give you much for the synopsis, but I went in blind and I am so glad I did! Absolutely obsessed with this one; the perfect beach thriller. It’s not too dark, not too disturbing, and (perhaps disturbingly) just plain fun to read. I personally loved the Chicago references. Someone did their research! I think it is quite a feat to write a thriller that’s dripping with suspense, filled with a bit of dread, and hooks you without any super dark subject matter!
I am pairing this book with Palmer’s Paloma, based on a signature cocktail served at one of the book’s parties. My tequila of choice is Isabel’s favorite, Siete Leguas Siete Décadas Blanco.
