The Third Gilmore Girl
The Third Gilmore Girl
Kelly Bishop
my review : ✮✮✮✮
I started listening to this book knowing embarrassingly little about Kelly Bishop outside of her role as Emily Gilmore on one of my very favorite shows, Gilmore Girls. I am no Broadway buff, so I had no clue she was such an accomplished performer or that one of the characters in Chorus Line was based on her life! Suffice it to say, I learned so much about Kelly Bishop, and the book almost read like fiction because I had no clue what was going to happen next (versus picking up a memoir about someone whose life you’ve followed closely). Honestly, if you had told me beforehand how much of this story was about her time on Broadway, I may have skipped it because I am not super passionate about the subject matter. However, this goes to show you if a story is well written, it can be captivating no matter your background! I had a great time listening to Kelly tell her fascinating story and found myself laughing out loud countless times.
If the title makes you think you’re going to get 400 pages of Gilmore Girls behind-the-scenes stories, adjust your expectations! There are a few chapters dedicated to Gilmore Girls that I thoroughly enjoyed, and the forward is written by GG creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, but this is an honest look at the long career and impressive life of Kelly Bishop (you’ll hit the GG parts around the 70% mark).
Some parts were a bit slow for me, but overall, I was fascinated with Kelly’s life story, and I have a whole new appreciation for her Emily Gilmore character. In Emily’s honor, I will be pairing this book with a gin martini 🍸🍸
