The Best Worst Thing

The Best Worst Thing

Lauren Okie

my review : ✮✮✮✮

This romance really took me by surprise! Great banter, deeply emotional, and well written. A romance that feels very real. Not a rom-com, definitely a “rom-dram”.

Our leading woman, Nicole Speyer, has been struggling with infertility for years. It’s caused her and her gorgeous, perfect-on-paper husband to drift apart, and we meet them at their final attempt at a successful embryo transfer to their surrogate. Hours after the transfer, Nicole returns home and gets the shock of her life when she realizes her husband is sleeping with their dog walker. Nicole does what every sane woman would do: gets drunk with her best friend and shows up at the door of her (hot, nerdy, golden retriever) long-ago colleague.

I thought all the tough subject matter was handled beautifully, which is probably because it’s inspired by the author’s own experience trying to have a baby. This isn’t a book that just deals with infertility; this is a book about infertility.

Don’t go in looking for an escape! Things are real, messy, and feel very true to life. But it’s also funny and steamy and filled to the brim with pining!

Best enjoyed with a twist on the Aperol Spritz that Marni mentions (Marni might be my favorite character in the book). It’s made with tequila and habaneros, and I am dying to try it once I pop this baby out.
