Rites of the Starling
Rites of the Starling
Devney Perry
my review : ✮✮✮
WHEW, this book was a whirlwind! Just as many BR&B readers had cautioned, this is a slow burn romantasy, slow burn not in the romantic sense but in the world-building sense. You have to work your booty off to remember places, people, monsters, & things!
Here’s where the great romantasy divide is... if you are like me and are into romantasy for the romance first (meaning: while we are obsessed with ACOTAR, book 2 is your favorite, and while we love Basgiath, we are really there less for the details of the politics and war and more for Xaden and Violet and their fighting and throne scenes, IYKYK), this might be a bit tricky to be obsessed with. I have just come to the conclusion that for me to be obsessed-impossible-to-put-down-reach-for-the-stars-world-series-kinda-love, it’s gotta be a romantasy where there’s just a lot of real estate in the pages dedicated to the love story.
SO! All that said, this is excellent. The world-building is fascinating once you get it (which took me an embarrassingly long time), and by the end, I was really enthralled in the story! My socks were semi knocked off! It just depends on what kind of romantasy reader you are. If you are a cheeky little romance loving fair weather reader like I am, this might be a bit of a slower read. It is still good! Just, ya know, I am not ready to name my newborn Ransom (or really Andreas 🥵).
Also, I will totally be reading book 3.
