The Guncle
The Guncle
Steven Rowley
my review : ✮✮✮✮
I don’t know what to call this book besides… life affirming?
I am so charmed by the writing, the characters, and the rich & beautiful story. There is a delicate balance between grief and humor in this book that is so well done.
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (a nickname he did not know he had but that he (begrudgingly) embraces ), has always loved his niece and nephew the way any fabulous aunt or uncle does during the short spurts of time they see each other! So when tragedy strikes, and Maisie and Grant lose their mother, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. These two little kids take his fabulous Palm Springs home and turn it on its head. Life has never been so fun (or hard)!! You’ll probably laugh, maybe cry, and definitely crave a martini 🍸
A true feel-good tale. Something that takes and acknowledges life’s hardships and leaves you feeling… full and happy?? Truly a feat.
Best enjoyed with a martini and with your own Guncle, whoever that is in your life.

“I need you to remember something. We’ll call it Guncle Rule sweet sixteen: I want you to really live. To live is the rarest of things. Most people merely exist.”
