my review : ✮✮✮✮
The irony of reviewing a book about a book reviewer is not lost on me! Although I don’t flatter myself to put myself even remotely in the same stratosphere as Selina Chan.
This book is marketed as a romance, and while there’s a romance that packs an excellent punch, I think it’s more beneficial (for me, at least!) to enter this book as if it’s general fiction! Once I shed the expectation of a traditional romance, I really loved the story.
This book is about Parker Navarro and Selina Chan. Parker is a very impressive literary fiction author who received a hefty $1.2M advance on his debut novel, only for it to be ripped to shreds by critic Selina Chan. Years later, he’s recovered from becoming a bit of a laughingstock in the publishing world and has written his second book, which, before being released, is once again reviewed and LOATHED by Selina Chan. Incensed, he confronts her at a party they both happen to be at, their fight goes viral, and the rest is (very well-written) history.
This book explores the tension between the artist and their critics. Intense, vulnerable, at times a bit slow, and at other times a bit hot. I had a great time reading this. I can’t wait to hear what you guys thought!
Best paired with a Jack Rose cocktail, a favorite of Ernest Hemingway, Parker Navarro, and Selina Chan! Swipe for the recipe!
